Star Trek: The Motion Picture
|
IMDB rating: 6.20 Plot: A strange cloud descends upon Klingon vessels and eradicates them with an energy bolt. The Epsilon IX space station alerts the Federation, but they too are wiped out by the entity. The starship assigned to the case is, what else, the NCC-1701. That would be the registration number for the U.S.S. Enterprise, which has been rebuilt. Thus, the entire original crew you knew from the TV show returns. Although they are prepared to face the entity, nothing will prepare them for the ride to come. The film asks the question Paul Gauguin asks in a painting bearing this name: “Where do [I] come from? What [am I]? Where [am I] going?” Trekkers, note the appearance of Will Decker, the son of Matt Decker, who killed himself in the TV episode, “The Doomsday Machine”. The film can be summed up in a single word: beautiful. |

Two questions about Star Trek?
Okay, so I’ve now watched the entire three seasons of TOS, and the first four Trek movies. I LOVED TOS so much. I’m not even a sci-fi fan at all but the characters were so compelling that I just had to keep coming back. I finished TOS yesterday (for the first time) and then I watched the Motion Picture. Like many, I thought it sucked. The second one was good, the third was pretty good, the fourth was AWESOME! Now, for my first question:
I’ve heard that things crumble like cornbread after The Voyage Home. It left on a really good note and left me feeling satisfied of where it ended. I’m worried that continuing the movie franchise will ruin that feeling and will make me upset at what they did to my favorite characters. So I ask, to continue or not to continue?
This leads me to question numero dos. I’ve realized that it’s actually rare for someone (especially my age, 19) to have gotten into the show/franchise at this point without having seen the new 2009 film and is in it for the "OMG PRETTY!!!" I’ve become very attached to the original cast and what they brought to their characters, but because I hear it’s really good, I’m thinking about giving it a shot. So, I ask, is the new movie disappointing to someone who is first and foremost a huge fan of TOS cast/characters?
Please and thank you for your help.
I thought Star Treks V and VI were good. There were some great character building moments in both of them and a lot of humor. (When else are you going to find Spock singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat?) I sometimes wonder why people hate Star Trek V as much as they do. If you are a die hard Trekkie, you have to watch it!
As for the new movie…
Being a Trekkie for as long as I have been, 10 years (keep in mind this is half of my lifetime), I did have some nitpicky things with the new movie. There were aspects to the characters that I was a little squirmy about. I do feel that they explained what they did well enough to fit it in with the rest of the cannon. It’s just gonna take a little more time to grow on me.

I can only answer the second question. The movie is very good and there are a lot of in jokes to TOS. I liked it and I would give it a shot

1) Continue "to go where no man has gone before…"
2) My favorite Star Trek series is the original 3 seasons, also. The 2009 film is really, REALLY quite good. I highly recommend you see it! My favorite movie is the 4th one, also. It was so close to the original series – ESPECIALLY with the humor…! Enjoy the 2009 movie as an enhancement on explaining the past (prequel) without having the actual actors playing their respective parts. In my opinion, all did a very good job.

I’m 41 and I became a fan of the TOS when I was just a tike watching it on syndicated network. For me, the new movie was a disappointment because….well I can’t exactly say because that would ruin the whole plot of the movie!!! And I don’t want to do that to you. In the end, the more I think about it, the more I like the new movie. It has awesome special effects, Chris Pine is soooo cute as a young Kirk, and a ton of other reasons to like it.
I’m reading Star Trek books now and am in the middle of Diane Carey’s "Final Frontier" (good read btw) and I wonder how the authors who tried to stay true to TOS feel about the new movie as well. Go for it and watch it though. I feel jealous about you being 19 first of all and secondly for you experiencing Star Trek for the first time. Lucky you.
